Maps and QW player

d8d.org have put together a new ETQW maps section, very googley in style and great for acclimatising  for the uninitiated. (But, no.. you won't see any Strogg waving back on these!)

CyboPat also did not want to be left out of the ETQW innovation round and managed to put together a program called "QW Player" , which provides a ton of new options for viewing those ingame recordings you have been holding onto for a special occasion.

(The website itself is in Czech.. but if you download the file, the readme is English, so have no fear!)

Welcome to Quake Wars

Copies of ETQW hit the shelves of stores throughout Europe and Australia yesterday.. before quickly bouncing back off again into the hands of the people who have been waiting for this game for up to 2 YEARS.

That level of devotion to a new game is unheard of... we know it hurt, we were right there with you all. But, doesn't it feel so much better now?

My own story: Yesterday I hit the shops at 9.15 am, thinking "oh, it's early, nobody is around, they will have loads of copies!"

Turns out that the shop got their delivery a day early, unloaded them (the shop assistant was also a fan and had called all his mates to come get the goodies..) The result?

4 copies left! 4! Out of over 100 delivered to a tiny weeny shop in the middle of Nowhereland (the official name of the town I live in... ok, not.. but it should be!)

I swear I heard "Kill the Human food" on a short walk to pick up my recently revived car yesterday (that's a whole new drama story!). I'm pretty sure it was coming from the bushes.

I walked a LOT faster, I can tell you!

So.. anyway, QuakeWars. What is it about this game which makes half the world sit up and WAIT (an act unheard of in today's Gimme generation)for over 2 years?

If you got your copy yesterday, played the demo, played the beta(s), read the news posted here or anywhere else.. then you have a pretty good idea already.

If you haven't, then you are probably lost. BIG TIME.

So, here is our little guide to help you get started! (click more to read it, I am eating up homepage with my rambling!)

Client Update

Just in time for the launch, the latest client update has been prepared and is full of new-functiony goodness to make playing the final release version everything you have been waiting for and more.

It will be rolled out via the game's auto-updater and the changelog (as published here ) looks something like this:

  • Updated Linux client compatibility
  • Fixed performance drop of soft particles on some graphics cards
  • Removed XP award for destroying newly spawned vehicles (spawn camping)
  • Improved bot control of the GDF Titan Tank
  • Fixed dedicated LAN server administrators reverting to default group on map change
  • Fixed players occasionally not being able to change the mission they are on
  • Server Launcher now clears the map rotation when changing game mode
  • Fixed localized clients reverting to unlocalized if player starts a lite server on the same PC
  • Fixed image pure check (anti-cheating) erroneously failing for MegaTextures

So, now we know that... what the hell are you doing sitting there reading this? Go and get in line, grab your copy and Get PLAYING!!

Interview with Paul Wedgwood

If you have some spare time (and the means to do so), go out and grab yourself a copy of the latest issue of Games For Windows .

Locki's latest interview, previewed on 1up.com, digs all the way down to the crusty layer beneath the "dirt", rooting about in the childhood, history and mind of the man behind Enemy Territory: Quake wars.

Ever asked yourself what would happen if you hooked up 3 PCs, a toaster and a bicycle pump? If so, maybe you too could have a glorious future in multiplayer games ahead of you.

The Splash Damage Story

Sometimes only the original author's own words will do.. so...

QUOTE:

"This feature on the origins of the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars team, Splash Damage, was originally published in February this year by the world’s cleverest games development website, Gamasutra. The piece is based around an interview with Splash Damage owner and founder, Paul Wedgwood. I’ve updated it slightly, to reflect the fact that we’re now rather close to the release of that game. That meeting with Wedgwood went on to provide material for my book about gaming, which I’ll pimp to death on here once it’s approaching publication. Anyway, read on for the story of the little mod team that ended up making one of the games of 2007. If you want to make it big in games, this is a pretty good way to go about it"

Can you run it?

Still in doubt about your system? Want to know if you can run it?

Well, fear not! Help is at hand with System Requirements Lab's handy little program.

(Warning, my firewall went a little nuts with this one, but it is NOT spyware and is safe to run!)
